1/2/2024 0 Comments Savitar costumes for kids![]() The glimpse of Central City’s future was nothing if not depressing. On a related note - this episode was actually directed by Tom Cavanagh, who proved himself just as capable behind the camera as in front of it. Then there’s Future H.R., who seems to have found his true calling as a purveyor of 50 Shades of Grey-style smut to horny housewives. Granted, it’s not as big a leap for Martin to play an eight-year-older version of Joe as it is the younger cast members, but he still delivered a very emotionally charged performance this week. Martin was also terrific as the grieving Joe West. If nothing else, “The Once and Future Flash” is a testament to the enduring bond between Cisco and Barry, one that endures even after the blow Barry dealt his friend post-Flashpoint. Carlos Valdes was great as Future Cisco, a character clinging to the hope that he might one day be able to get the band back together even as his city crumbles around him. Other cast members were more successful at playing older versions of their familiar self. This new suit could use a little more fine-tuning before it’s introduced on a permanent basis (it could stand to be a little more form-fitting, at least), it offers an intriguing glimpse of where the show’s costume design might be headed in Season 4 and beyond. Looking at that costume and the recently revealed Black Lightning suit, you can see the Arrow-verse shifting away from the fabric-y approach to superhero costumes and towards sleeker, more movie-quality fare. I was more impressed with Future Barry’s upgraded Flash costume, though. Heck, he’d be right at home with these guys: Between the long hair and dark clothing, Future Barry actually looked younger than his past self, like if Barry had gone through an emo phase in high school. To be fair, though, the costume design was more at fault than anything. Gustin did his best to carry himself differently and speak in a slightly deeper, more haggard voice, but it was still more akin to watching another alternate reality version of Barry rather than his older, more world-weary self. I can’t say Grant Gustin is as skilled as Stephen Amell at making the two versions of his character feel like distinct people. This flash-forward also allowed the show to attempt something Arrow does nearly every week by exploring two parallel points in time. If Team Flash can’t save Iris, they may well be doomed. This episode may have lacked the fun factor of Barry’s field trips to Earth-2, but it did offer a greater weight and context to the ongoing Savitar conflict. Plus, Cisco has cyborg hands, which isn’t nearly as cool as it sounds. Iris is dead, Team Flash is disbanded and everyone is profoundly unhappy. The city itself is dilapidated and crime-ridden. ![]() Central City circa-2025 is certainly an unpleasant place.
